3 tips for a great first impression

Whether you are starting a business or are looking for a job, one of the primary keys to your success will be the first impression you make when meeting new potential partners, clients, bosses, and colleagues.

Making a good first impression involves your appearance, your body language, your attitude, as well as both what you say and how you say it.

confidence and comfort

Feeling confident and comfortable in your physical appearance goes a long ways with making a good first impression. Wearing clothes that are both professional but comfortable for you will allow your personality to shine through. In contrast, wearing an outfit that makes you feel self-conscious will likely result in your behavior being more subdued and nervous. Take time to brainstorm about the outfits you feel most comfortable in, and then explore how you can make sure those same outfits look clean and polished.

The same advice goes for makeup, jewelry, nail polish, and your smile. You've likely read articles that say to "tone down" the makeup or jewelry but I think it's more important for you to feel like you are presenting your true self. Sport that bold red lip or chunky jewelry if that's what makes you feel like you.

If you feel self-conscious about your smile, work it into your 5-year plan and savings to find out what you need to do to feel better about it. Whether it's whitening, teeth straightening, or cosmetic dental surgery, look online (like at http://apetalumadentist.com/ ) and find price ranges for your goal procedures.

image first

Making sure your clothes are wrinkle-free, your shoes are clean, and your hair is dry and brushed shows that you have forethought and time management skills to present a positive image. These basics along with good personal hygiene are a minimum to put your best face forward.  A candidate wearing rip-free jeans, a clean sweater, with brushed hair will make a better first impression than  someone who shows up to an interview with a wrinkled suit, scuffed shoes, and several days of stubble.

attitude

Presenting yourself with a positive attitude and a smile sets the stage for a good first impression. Greet someone with a firm handshake, warm smile, and eye contact (if culturally appropriate) and introduce yourself clearly. Smiling (even if you don't feel like it) translates warmth into your voice, which is why many people are told to smile when talking on the phone.
What are your go-to tips for making a great first impression?
