There are also many aids available now that help all workers lift heavy loads safer, that can be used by humans of many sizes.

But there are some jobs where the skill of the labor is more important than your strength. And that means you can learn that skill. From obtaining your forklift certification or CDL license to completing an associate's program in automative systems technology, you can earn your space at the job you want because you will have the skills and the motivation.

Learning new skills is not only limited to skilled labor. It applies to learning new things intellectually as well, especially for jobs where you need to"know your stuff" as early as the interview. Interviewers want to hire someone that reminds them of themselves - whether consciously or subconsciously. Your skills must stand off the page and be echoed in your confidence and ability to talk the talk.

Examples include certifications and coursework for various aspects of IT, cybersecurity, computer programming, machine learning, and data analysis, which cane help you get the job or get that promotion.

Gaining expertise in business psychology, entrepreneurship, and management will help you fork your career path towards leadership.

self-belief and confidence

Confidence is crucial when striving for excellence, especially in male-dominated fields, where you may be doubted before you have a chance to show what you know.

Building self-confidence is a task unto its own, but when it comes to confidence in the workplace, you can start with your expertise and communication skills.

Prepare for meetings so that you have the most up-to-date information on the topic at hand.

Edit your emails to remove phrases that dilute your message. If you are asking for something, or telling someone something, you do not need to apologize for doing your job.

Research tips for better public speaking. Practice them, and identify which ones work best for you. Make it a point to practice out loud, whether it is a sentence or two you might say at a meeting, or if it is an entire presentation you are giving.

You must be confident not only in what you know but portray confidence in how you communicate it.

This type of self-confidence goes hand-in-hand with speaking up for yourself. You can be assertive while also displaying empathy and communicating clearly. You will get your point across without alienating others. There will always be someone who thinks a woman speaking up is a (bad word) or is being over-emotional. Those people do not matter - unless they are your supervisor. If so, maintain written proof of verbal conversations, such as following up on meetings with a written email summary, and recording instances of bad behavior for yourself with time and date details.

Here are some tips and examples:

If asked to take notes at a meeting, politely decline and volunteer another colleague. Or, suggest that the role rotate through the group if it is a regularly scheduled meeting.

When presented with a distasteful comment or joke, act as if you do not understand it, and ask the person to clarify. (Also, record the situation in case needed for HR). This is an effective method for calling out bad behavior. I promise there is at least one other person in your office who is uncomfortable with that person's behavior. You speaking up will empower others to do the same, rather than to tolerate it.

build a support network

Photo by LinkedIn Sales Solutions on Unsplash

A strong support system is essential for your professional growth.

Whether it is someone to give you advice, or someone to advocate for you, or it is a group where you feel like you've found your community -it is worth the time and effort to find a support system for yourself.

It may not be essential for your current status quo, but tapping into women's professional networks, asking someone at work to be your mentor, or participating in online forums and trainings for women in business can be a boon to not only your confidence, but your skills as well.

Networking always pays off in the long-term when it comes to further down the road. I like to categorize it as a "snowball effect". You may not feel like your time has paid off after attending one or two networking events, but a year down the road you will look back and be surprised. Five years down the road, and you've become a mentor yourself.

Just as you would be more likely to recommend someone you know well for a job, so will others for you. These days, though, sticking with one job for too long can feel like you’re not moving forward. The concept of "company loyalty" isn’t as strong as it used to be. Companies aren’t always loyal to their employees, so why should you feel obligated to be loyal to them?

It’s crucial to start strong in any job, but be aware that you could be laid off, replaced, or have your pay cut unexpectedly. It’s not right, and it’s not ideal, but it highlights the importance of not showing unwavering loyalty to an employer that may not return it.

Thankfully, more employees are recognizing this reality. Sometimes, to get where you want to be—or even just to earn a living wage—you need to switch jobs. Let’s break down how making these strategic moves can be more beneficial than sticking to the traditional method of climbing the corporate ladder in one place.

While job hopping might seem like a bold move, it's important to remember that work occupies a big part of our lives and influences how we spend our free time. Prioritizing your own well-being doesn’t mean you’re harming others—it's just about making sure you're taking care of yourself.

cottonbro studio

find the right jobs

First, you need to find a job that aligns with your wants and needs—and remember, you also need to be a good fit for the employer. Many job platforms aren’t particularly helpful. They require you to use vague search terms and sift through a lot of buzzwords to find essential information like salary. Often, companies are intentionally vague about such details.

Fortunately, not all platforms are like this. Some AI job-hunting platforms are designed to find the perfect match for you without the annoying buzzwords and offer transparency about pay because you deserve to know your worth. The key to job hunting is to aim for a higher salary and be prepared to negotiate without appearing desperate. Speaking of negotiating...

master the art of negotiating

One of the best perks of job hopping? Each move is a fresh chance to negotiate. When you switch companies, you're not limited by internal pay scales or raise caps. You can leverage your new skills and competing offers to secure a much higher salary than you would get from incremental raises.

However, it’s not just about the money (though it often is). Strategic job hoppers also negotiate for perks like remote work, flexible hours, and professional development opportunities. Each job move allows you to shape your role to better fit your life and career goals.

Looking for resources to improve your negotiation skills?

My favorite book is Never Split the Difference* by Chris Voss.

I read it prior to my last job search and felt more comfortable when it came to salary and other benefit negotiations.

broaden your network

Job hopping isn’t just about climbing the pay scale; it’s a great way to build a diverse skill set. It’s also easier to land a job when your resume reflects this variety of experiences. You'll find in this day and age, people circulate through similar companies, and you will likely encounter the same people again.

This diverse experience makes your resume more impressive and positions you as a top-tier candidate for future roles. Additionally, you’ll build a broad network of professional contacts across various industries, which can be invaluable as you advance in your career.

*This is an affiliate link. Training in the medical field can cost quite a lot, with annual training expenses running into the thousands. If you aim to become a doctor, you're looking at student costs upwards of two hundred thousand dollars. However, it's not all doom and gloom. Once you qualify, doctors typically earn some of the highest salaries, especially in the private sector. This means you can quickly recoup the money you invested in your education.

time

Next, consider the possibility of time - training can take many years, even for some of the entry-level positions, which require significant skill and experience before you can start earning a living. If you're eager to move forward quickly, a medical career might not be the best choice for you. There are plenty of other options that could better suit your timeline and won't require the four or more years it takes to progress in the medical field.

choices

People often think that a career in the medical field means becoming either a doctor or a nurse, but that's not true. The medical sector is diverse, offering many different career paths. For example, you could consider a degree from a medical assistant college. This option is an excellent choice if you want to be in the heart of the action and help people in need.

day-to-day

Finally, consider the personal demands of a medical career. We've discussed the professional requirements, but it's also important to think about the personal aspects. To succeed in medicine, you need to thrive under pressure. Additionally, you need to consider how you handle tragedy, as losing patients can be a part of the job unless you specialize in an area where this is less common. Ultimately, it's crucial to do thorough research to determine if a medical career is the right choice for you.

boosting your career with vocational education

http://www.baileydebarmore.com/blog/boosting-your-career-with-vocational-education

http://www.baileydebarmore.com/blog/boosting-your-career-with-vocational-education#comments

Uncategorized

In today's competitive job market, a traditional four-year degree is no longer the only route to a successful career. Unlike traditional academic programs that emphasize theoretical knowledge, vocational training focuses on practical application. This allows students to gain the experience needed to excel in their careers from day one.

A major advantage of vocational education is the shorter duration of study. Most programs can be completed in two years or less, enabling students to enter the workforce sooner. This is especially beneficial for those looking to minimize student debt and start earning quickly. Vocational education institutions excel at updating their curricula to meet these changing demands. Programs in renewable energy, cybersecurity, and advanced manufacturing are becoming increasingly popular because they offer the specific technical skills best acquired through targeted training.

In addition to technical skills, vocational education also emphasizes soft skills like communication, teamwork, and problem-solving. By integrating both hard and soft skills, vocational programs ensure students are well-rounded and prepared for the challenges of the modern workplace.

where to go next

Vocational institutions like Helms College are essential in providing quality education across multiple paths. They offer a variety of programs tailored to the needs of diverse learners, from recent high school graduates to working adults seeking career changes. While not everyone can swing long stretches of time away from home, some companies guarantee you home a certain number of days a week. But if you prefer to be on the road, I'm sure they'll take you up on it.

Transcriptionist

A transcriptionist typically listens to audio recordings and transcribes them. The benefit of transcription work is that if you have a high word per minute count you can make a lot of money per minute that you transcribe.

Many people do this freelance which can help give you a better work-life balance if necessary and can be done independently from home.

There are a variety of offshoot careers that you could also utilize here that predominantly involve you working by yourself. For example, if you want to break from freelance work, you could seek out a job transcribing legal hearings.

Transcription work doesn't require professional qualifications, but does offer additional education such as speed-typing courses to help fine-tune your skills. But you don't have to be a pro tik tok-er or social media consultant to advertise your work as a content creator.

If you have impeccable spelling and grammar skills, consider ghost writing. With the rise of AI, I would stay away from solely being able to do copy writing.

You can also gain certifications in professional editing and be an editor for scientific journals, books, and other publications.

If your interest is more in the visual arts and you enjoy editing videos, you offer a skill that many do not have. There are so many people out there who have great ideas for their video channel but lack the ability to put together good videos. You can offer your services, and also generate passive income with basic tutorial videos on a youtube channel.

As you gain work or work on volunteer projects, keep track of the details and examples so you can offer a portfolio for future employers.

Working to get any new job can be as much about figuring out how your attitudes and ethos will work in a certain environment as much as your skills. From leveraging technology to fostering a supportive work environment, read on to explore the key elements that can transform the customer experience in the realm of shift work.

challenges of rotating staff

Rotating staff schedules pose unique challenges for businesses, particularly in the realm of customer service.

The constant shift changes can disrupt the continuity of service, leading to inconsistencies in customer interactions and often a negative impact on customer satisfaction.

On the employee side, the rotating nature of schedules can affect staff morale, as employees may find it challenging to establish a routine or work-life balance.

The unpredictability of shifts contributes to fatigue and stress among your workers, which can lead to decreased job satisfaction and performance, and higher staff turnover.

Striking a balance between your business needs and your staffs' well-being is crucial.

importance of training

Onboarding and ongoing training play pivotal roles in the success and sustainability of your business and your staff.

In the initial onboarding phase, employees are introduced to the organization's culture, values, and specific job responsibilities, setting the foundation for a positive work experience. Effective onboarding helps new hires acclimate quickly, reducing the time it takes for them to become productive contributors.

Ongoing training is equally crucial as it ensures that employees stay updated on industry trends, technological advancements, and evolving job requirements.

Continuous learning not only enhances employees' skills and knowledge but also fosters a culture of innovation and adaptability within the organization. In a rapidly changing business landscape, ongoing training is essential for employees to stay competitive and for businesses to remain agile and responsive to market dynamics.

Some example training methods include:

Role-playing scenarios during staff workshops are helpful when your staff work with customers. Sometimes just providing example statements, and having employees act out a difficult situation, can help prepare them to feel ready to take on the most difficult customer situation.

Job shadowing involves a new employee observing and working alongside an experienced colleague, typically in a similar or related role. Through direct observation, the trainee gains practical insights into day-to-day tasks, work processes, and interpersonal dynamics. This hands-on approach facilitates a smooth transition into the new role and promotes a clear understanding of expectations. Often during the course of shadowing, the new employee can take over more and more of the responsibilities, while under the observation of another employee to correct any mistakes.

Cross-training exposes your staff to various aspects of the business and helps foster an understanding of each team member's role. This approach enhances versatility and helps employees appreciate the interconnectedness of different functions within the organization.

communication strategies

Shift-based workplaces often face challenges related to information continuity, and a breakdown in communication can lead to errors, misunderstandings, and decreased overall productivity.

Establishing clear communication protocols, such as shift handovers, digital communication platforms, or regular team meetings, becomes essential.

These strategies facilitate the exchange of critical information, updates on ongoing projects, and any incidents that occurred during a particular shift.

Open and transparent communication fosters a sense of unity among employees working on different shifts, promoting collaboration, and ensuring that everyone is well-informed and aligned with the organizational goals.

By prioritizing effective communication between shifts, businesses can mitigate potential issues, enhance efficiency, and maintain a cohesive and well-informed workforce.

effective shift handovers

Effective shift handovers are crucial for maintaining continuity and ensuring that critical information is transferred between shifts. Here are two to three methods for achieving an effective shift handover:

Implementing a written handover log or report protocol is a traditional yet highly effective method. At the end of each shift, employees document key information such as ongoing tasks, completed projects, outstanding issues, and any other relevant details.

The incoming shift reviews this document at the beginning of their shift and can start their work with an understanding of the current status and what needs immediate attention.

This method provides a tangible record for reference and ensures that important details are not overlooked during the transition.

Utilizing virtual meeting spaces and other digital communication strategies can streamline the shift handover process.

Platforms like collaborative messaging apps or project management tools allow team members to share real-time updates, progress reports, and important information. This ensures that the handover is dynamic, immediate, and easily accessible to all relevant team members.

Face-to-face briefings provide an opportunity for team members from different shifts to meet in person and share what the next shift needs to know. It also lets the next shift provide feedback to the earlier shift - perhaps they are leaving a certain area unorganized that makes more work for the next shift.

In-person meetings allows for direct communication, immediate clarification of any queries, and the opportunity to convey nuances that might be challenging to capture in written form. Regular face-to-face handover meetings foster a sense of teamwork and collaboration, enhancing the overall communication and coordination between shifts.

utilizing technology

Technology plays a crucial role in optimizing shift work schedules for employers by streamlining processes, increasing efficiency, and improving overall workforce management. It's worth the time or consulting fees to find out which scheduling software meets your business needs.

Here are several ways technology can be utilized to achieve these goals and include features you may want to look for in your next software purchase. To make sure potential scheduling tools will meet your needs, be sure they present shift work examples and case studies.

You can leverage automated scheduling software to create, manage, and optimize shift work schedules. These tools take into account various factors such as employee availability, skills, and workload requirements. Automated scheduling helps reduce human errors, minimizes scheduling conflicts, and ensures that the right employees with the appropriate skills are assigned to each shift. Look for tools that have high scores for user-friendliness to lower the learning curve.

You can use data analytics and predictive tools to analyze historical data, employee performance metrics, and business trends. By identifying patterns and trends, you can optimize shift schedules based on peak business hours, demand fluctuations, and employee productivity. This data-driven approach enables more informed decision-making in workforce planning.

Mobile workforce management apps enable employees to access their schedules, request shift changes, and communicate with managers or team members in real time. This enhances flexibility for employees and simplifies communication for employers. Plus, mobile apps also provide a platform for quick responses to unexpected changes or emergencies, ensuring a more agile and responsive workforce.

Implementing employee self-service portals allows employees to input their availability, request time off, and view their schedules. This reduces the administrative burden on managers and empowers employees to take an active role in managing their work schedules. It also helps in maintaining accurate and up-to-date information, contributing to smoother scheduling processes.

Integrating scheduling software with HR and payroll systems streamlines administrative tasks. This integration ensures that changes in schedules are automatically reflected in payroll calculations, minimizing errors and saving time. It also facilitates a more cohesive management of employee data across different aspects of workforce management.

boosting morale

Maintaining energy and enthusiasm in a shift-based system is like nurturing a campfire. It requires a combination of strategy and sparks.

Recognition and appreciation
Regularly recognize and appreciate the efforts of shift workers. Acknowledge individual and team accomplishments, whether through verbal praise, written commendations, or employee recognition programs. Feeling valued for their contributions can significantly uplift morale.

Celebrate work anniversaries, birthdays, and other milestones to show appreciation for employees' dedication. Recognizing and celebrating these moments fosters a sense of belonging and appreciation.

Offering flexible incentives
Where possible, provide flexible scheduling options to accommodate employees' preferences and personal needs. Allowing employees to have a say in their work hours or offering options like compressed workweeks can enhance work-life balance and contribute to higher morale.

Recognize that everyone is motivated by different things and provide a range of rewards that allow your team to choose what resonates with them. Whether it's time off, a gift card or even the parking spot — offering flexibility ensures that your rewards strike the right chords.

Team building activities
Organize team-building activities that bring employees from different shifts together. This helps build a sense of camaraderie and teamwork, fostering positive relationships among colleagues. You'll also want to provide a comfortable space for employee breaks during work hours so they can continue fostering that team mentality!

Fair and transparent policies
Ensure that policies related to shift work, scheduling, and benefits are fair and transparent. Clear communication about expectations, policies, and any changes contributes to a positive work environment and reduces uncertainty, which can impact morale.

Encourage open communication and actively seek feedback from your workers. Involve them in decision-making processes and listen to their concerns. Feeling heard and having a sense of ownership in the workplace can have a profound positive impact on morale.

conclusion

Providing top-notch customer service with a rotating team requires an approach. It involves training, effective communication, smart utilization of technology and creative motivation methods. By taking the time to think through these points and how you can change or implement them in your own business, you're on your way to improving employee and customer satisfaction.

3 tips to start strong in your new job

http://www.baileydebarmore.com/blog/3-tips-to-start-strong-in-your-new-job

http://www.baileydebarmore.com/blog/3-tips-to-start-strong-in-your-new-job#comments

Uncategorized

You may be feeling a variety of emotions when starting a new job - hopefully most of them positive. Excitement at the prospect of new challenges and opportunities.Optimism from the idea of a fresh start and the chance to make a positive impact.Pride and gratitude at securing your new job and feeling recognized for your skills and qualifications. Some of the positive emotions you may be after, but not quite feeling yet, may be connection, satisfaction, and confidence. How can you start y [...]

You may be feeling a variety of emotions when starting a new job - hopefully most of them positive.

Excitement at the prospect of new challenges and opportunities.

Optimism from the idea of a fresh start and the chance to make a positive impact.

Pride and gratitude at securing your new job and feeling recognized for your skills and qualifications.

Some of the positive emotions you may be after, but not quite feeling yet, may be connection, satisfaction, and confidence.

How can you start your new job strong? How can you make a good first impression, especially when you are new to the workforce in general?

Many companies have similar onboarding processes, but when you've only held one or two jobs, the differences between them can feel like gulfs, not puddles.

In this post, I'll provide you with 3 things to expect in the first few weeks of starting out in your job, and tips on how to ace it all.

online learning

Many employers will have a tailored program of e-learning modules for each department. These programs help keep new staff up to speed on policy decisions and how they affect a career. The programs might involve cybersecurity policies, education on diversity in the workplace, how to report harassment, and standard operating procedures.

E-learning modules can be a little tedious to get through, but they embody the principles of the organization you work for and are often the first step in getting you onboarded.

IT and phishing tests

If you see a message in your inbox from an address that looks familiar but isn’t quite, odds are it’s a phishing test.

IT departments will often use this as a way to keep employees on their toes regarding email safety. Opening mail from an unrecognized sender, clicking links to provide your password, or getting caught in other schemes, can risk the integrity of your computer and organization's security system.

Be sure to pay attention to any reminders for IT security training, and know where the "Report Phishing" button is in your email system. You won’t get in trouble if the test snags you (usually), but you may get further training about how to avoid that in future, such as being told what to do after clicking a phishing link and other security practices to keep in mind.

weekly meetings

In most units of most departments in most companies, regularly weekly meetings are the norm. Whether you have one-on-one (1:1) meetings with everyone on your team or just your boss, or weekly team meetings, your calendar may fill up quickly. Be sure to prioritize these meetings, as they will help your team get to know you, easing in to feeling connected to your new work community, while also putting you forefront in their minds for new opportunities.

To make the most of your regular meetings early on, keep track of the questions that come up while you are working, so you can ask them during the meeting. Try to listen more than you talk during group meetings so you can start learning the team dynamics.

3 ways to turn leads into paying customers

http://www.baileydebarmore.com/blog/3-ways-to-turn-leads-into-paying-customers

http://www.baileydebarmore.com/blog/3-ways-to-turn-leads-into-paying-customers#comments

Business

Turning potential customers - or leads - into paying customers involves a strategic approach that focuses on building trust, providing value, and addressing their needs.Remember, the key is to create a seamless and positive customer experience throughout the entire journey, from the first interaction to the post-purchase phase. Here are several effective ways to convert leads into customers... understand your audience Market research is "the process of gathering informa [...]

Turning potential customers - or leads - into paying customers involves a strategic approach that focuses on building trust, providing value, and addressing their needs.

Remember, the key is to create a seamless and positive customer experience throughout the entire journey, from the first interaction to the post-purchase phase.

Here are several effective ways to convert leads into customers...

understand your audience

Market research is "the process of gathering information about customers and the market as a whole to determine a product or service’s viability." You can utilize a service to do this for you or hire a freelance web designer. You can also research DIY options by comparing their plans with your needs.

Then, optimize your website so that search engines can find you (i.e. search engine optimization). SEO means your website will show up in search engine results when someone searches for something related to your business or products. Then they can click the link, and your website gets traffic. That traffic leads to leads, and then hopefully customers.

Read articles to learn about SEO and changing trends or hire a seo firm to optimize your online presence. You may get cold-call emails from consultants offering you this service. Turn those down and find someone who is a good fit for your company. Spending the time to learn about SEO (or hiring an SEO consultant or firm) is a quality investment in your business.

Next in online presence is your social media presence. Through market research, you identified your target demographic. What social media platforms does that demographic use? If you are an adept social media marketer, or you are hiring one, you can launch accounts on all available platforms. Otherwise, choose the 1 or 2 that correspond with your target market.

Create high-quality content relevant to your audience, that doesn't solely revolve around sales, to show them how your business can meet their needs and fix their pain points. You can use blogs, videos, infographics, and other content formats to showcase your expertise and provide value, and you can even use a service to schedule your content, so you don't have to manually post every day.

create lead magnets

In addition to your products, create valuable content that leads can receive in exchange for contact information - such as eBooks, white papers, or a free trial of your services in exchange for signing up for your email list.

As part of your marketing strategy, utilize your email list for targeted campaigns with personalization and strategic segmentation. Your goal is for leads to click to your website through your emails - not delete or unsubscribe. Ideally, your email campaigns can help turn a lead into a paying customer. You can advertise exclusive offers or beta testing to subscribers only or maintain a member-only resource library on your website.

Offering resources such as these not only helps drive leads to your website, and maintain your customer base, but also positions your brand as an authority, established creditability, and builds trust.

4 advantages of upskilling

http://www.baileydebarmore.com/blog/4-advantages-of-upskilling

http://www.baileydebarmore.com/blog/4-advantages-of-upskilling#comments

Uncategorized

Upskilling is a proactive approach to personal and professional development. While some companies have insisted on a return to the workplace, others have recognized how productive employees can be at home.

A unique subset of remote workers is those of you that run a home business. You've been working out of your home long before it was mainstream... and while you have many of the same challenges as others working remotely, your additional tasks as a business owner make the stakes of your productivity a bit higher.

Balancing parenting and a home business can be challenging, but being purposeful about how you manage both can help. This post offers 5 tips on how to do just that.

make a schedule

One challenge of a home business, or working from home in general, is the separation of time and space. Sit down and create a weekly schedule that outlines parenting and family responsibilities like doctor appointments and soccer games. Then create a general daily schedule that has specific work hours. Just like leaving for a commute in the morning and going to work, head to your office and have your workday.

The next tip is about that office space.

set physical boundaries

Creating a schedule helps separate your two spheres - work and family - in terms of time. But you also want to have separation in space. Not everyone has the space to have a dedicated office space. If you're setting up at the dining room table every day (and then cleaning up) keep a tray or box with dedicated items, like your laptop riser, mouse, and keyboard so it's easy to get them out. Other desk accessories can help make your space feel more business than dinner time.

prioritize your tasks

Identify and prioritize your most important goals and priorities both at home and in your business. Focus on high-priority tasks during dedicated work hours and save less critical tasks for times when your attention is not as focused. You can do this by time of day, if you know you're sharper in the morning and crash in the afternoon, or if you have feel better having mundane tasks out of the way first thing in the workday.

create a village

In the work world, delegating tasks that you need to get done but don't have to do yourself is important to help manage your time. Whether that delegating is to an employee or a productivity software, it's important to maintain organization of your business.

In the family world, it also takes a village. In your family schedule, include time when you can share or offload parenting responsibilities to your partner, to a reliable daycare service, or form a group with other work-from-home parents to rotate care.

fill your bucket

You can't take care of others if you don't take care of yourself. If your wellness is a bucket of water, you give water best to others when your bucket overflows. Many tips for focusing on wellness are similar to these tips we've shared for balancing parenting and your home business.

Remember that finding the right balance is an ongoing process, and it's okay to adjust your strategies as needed. Put a reminder on your calendar to re-evaluate your work and home schedule to make sure everything continues to work. Flexibility and open communication with your family can help you navigate the challenges of balancing parenting and a home business successfully.

4 investments to make in your business

http://www.baileydebarmore.com/blog/4-investments-to-make-in-your-business

http://www.baileydebarmore.com/blog/4-investments-to-make-in-your-business#comments

Uncategorized

When you own a business, there is more that you can do than just logistics and expenses and income. Among the list included cloud computing, remote management tools, web-development technologies, analytic technologies, and data security.

They also mention the importance of having up-to-date computers and software packages. Along the same lines, having workflow automation and collaboration software, customer relationship management platforms (CRM) and project management platforms can make the difference in the success of your business early on for a variety of reasons.

Consider speaking with experts in your field to know what the best software for your business is. There are industry specific solutions that you should assess for the cost-benefit to your business. For example, for those in the electrical industry, electrical contractor software can help you manage and organize your jobs while helping you get paid on time. There are also software solutions to help consultants produce more accurate and consistent estimates.

marketing

Marketing strategies include an online presence (website and/or social media) and email campaigns, as well as traditional methods like direct mail, print advertising, trade shows, and local business communities.

When it comes to marketing, your choice of strategy centers around your target audience - if they are primarily local, then including traditional methods to reach those in your community, while also having an online presence for customer validation, can be a good way to go. If your audience is across the country, or even the world, then prioritizing your marketing options including paid marketing campaigns on a variety of websites to reach new customers is important.

You don't need to do every marketing idea first or at the same time. With the increase in remote work and the need to fill positions, some companies have struggled to clearly define their needs. This results in longer interview processes, which exhaust job candidates and places a higher burden on employees juggling hiring interviews and their day-to-day work. Even if you have the right skills and you have a robust resume, you could still struggle to land the interest of the companies you want - or any companies at all.

take courses online

First, if typical candidates in your field boast certifications or LinkedIn course badges, they may look more appealing during job searches than you do. If certain certifications are required for your positions of interest, then you definitely need to prioritize studying for those.
For voluntary certifications and online courses, you show evidence of your high drive and interest in ongoing learning. There are lots of qualifications that could be relevant for your business. It’s just a matter of finding the choices that employers are interested in, whatever these may be. For instance, if you work admin in a medical clinic, you could think about exploring an option such as BLS certification. If you're in a specific field like IT or business development, look for articles in your trade magazines that outline the skills they forecast competitive employees will need in the next 5 or so years.

optimize your resume

Your resume should, at the minimum, have clear and consistent formatting, have your correct name and contact information, and be free of typos. Have a friend or spouse look over your resume to catch any mistakes you can no longer see. Save this final version as your Master Copy. Now, when you want to apply for a job, review the job description and qualifications. You should have some bullet points and sentences in your resume already that match these - but they may be in slightly different wording. Replace 2-3 of your phrases with their phrases to optimize your chances of getting through their ATS system. Save this as Resume-COMPANY.docx so you can reuse your master copy for another application.

build your personal brand

If you are looking to network with potential colleagues and employers, then building your personal brand will make you stand out from others they meet. Creating this brand and exhibiting it in your online presence as well as your informal networking, such as informational interviews (when you aren't looking for a job and thus have no ask), will help you settle into your "career identity" and b able to present yourself professionally and consistently during interviews. Consider being active on social media via professional accounts and updating your LinkedIn profile detailing all your professional attributes. On LinkedIn, follow tags and companies relevant to your industry, engage in posts on your feed, and repost things that interest you and match your brand.

find your confidence

When you attend job interviews, even ones over the phone, it is essential that you come across as someone with confidence. You only have a short time to impress your prospective employer so everything you do counts. If you are someone that lacks confidence you may be wondering where you are going to find some for your job interviews. The term fake it till you make it is key, and if you put on a show that still remains true to who you are, it may help you get to the next round.

Smiling while talking on the phone makes you sound more positive and outgoing. Wearing an outfit that makes you feel both comfortable and confident is important. If you aren't comfortable in pantsuits, but love skirtsuits, go with that. There are many ways to dress professionally and still be comfortable.

network in your industry

It’s often less about what you know and more about who you know, especially in close-knit industries where it seems like everyone knows everyone else.

The good news is that there are lots of tools that make networking a far easier process in your business. For instance, you might want to think about getting more active on social networks like LinkedIn. You can find local events or online events, see other attendees, and send them a message prior asking to connect with them. Set up a 15-minute phone call or coffee meeting as an informational interview.

find what employers want

Finally, you should think about what your employers want from you. Employers will always have a wish list of what they are searching for when filling a particular role - though they may not always be consistent with this throughout the interview process. Working with a recruiter is a helpful way to navigate hiring challenges. For example, for external recruiters, hiring managers pitch themselves and their position to the recruiter, and the recruiter helps them narrow down what they are really looking for and communicate that through a job description. You're able to get key insights from the recruiter as well as debrief after the interview.

Keep in mind, however, that the attributes they list in the job description likely match the existing teams and working culture they have. So, you want to make sure that it sounds like you will be a good fit - that your working style is consistent with team members in that department. You can ask about this further during an interview with questions like, "Can you describe what would make a new hire particularly successful in the first 2 - 6 months?"

5 ways to be a better people leader

http://www.baileydebarmore.com/blog/5-ways-to-be-a-better-people-leader

http://www.baileydebarmore.com/blog/5-ways-to-be-a-better-people-leader#comments

Uncategorized

It seems like there are some people who are naturally born leaders. Just like your employees get feedback each year in their annual reviews, your own performance as a leader can use an assessment. Talk to friends and peers about particular aspects of your personality relevant to people leading, and ask your team to provide feedback in a way they are comfortable.

engage your team

What do your employees need from you?

They need trust, built through honesty, clarity, and consistency.
They need compassion, developed through seeing them as more than their job responsibilities, but as people.
They need stability, by you creating a space where they feel like they can trust you to communicate with them what they need to know by being forthcoming and answering questions.
They need hope, by being able to visualize the future that you see, because you share that direction with them and communicate positively even amongst difficulty.

If morale seems low, look at the granular things you do day-to-day. What do your emails, conversation, and instructions communicate to your team? Do they build trust, communicate compassion, and provide a feeling of stability and hope? You may roll your eyes thinking that every single communication and interaction you have with an employee should address those needs, but it's true.

Your role as their leader is a privilege. By building this type of culture around your team, you can support your team to meet their goals while also contributing to the overall business goals.

walk in their shoes

If you feel disconnected from your team's responsibilities (or get the feedback that you don't understand the processes you're requesting from your employees), think of a way to take a walk in their shoes.

Particularly for managers who did not work up through the ranks of those they lead (such as a Director of Statistics who worked as a statistician under someone else before being promoted), it's even more important for you to get a feel for how difficult the tasks are that your employees undertake and a reasonable amount of time to expect them completed in.

For stressful positions out in the field, while you are directing and delegating from a central location, spend a day in the field so you can walk in their shoes. For example, an ambulance dispatcher should consider taking a Royal Ambulance ride-along to understand what a day in the life of an EMT is really like.

For a project manager function, consider shadowing someone from a similar team if it would be too distracting to shadow one of your own employees.

Before you head out into the field or your day of shadowing, review past performance evaluations and goals met/not met to see what things you should pay particular attention to.

encourage growth

You need to make sure that you are invested in their success as well as their growth. If you have someone above you, you are aware that you are judged by your team's performance. It can be challenging however, when you are the top of the food chain at your company, to hold yourself accountable for your team's performance when it may feel easier to place the blame down on individual employees.

But a leader that celebrates their team's wins as the win of the team, and not the win of the leader, helps to develop your employees.

A key way to develop your employees is to listen to their professional goals, make note of them and follow through when an opportunity arises for them to pursue that goal. This demonstrates to them that you listen, that you care, and that you consider yourself successful only when they are.

discuss, don't tell

Your team looks to you as the source of the information they need to know to get their jobs done. Your expectations should be clear and realistic, and communicated clearly. While presentation of a new project will start with you telling your team what the expectations are, open the floor to discussion on anticipated obstacles or ways to make the process go more efficiently. They are the ones doing the work, and who likely have worked on something similar. By listening to their contributions, you show that you value them and their ideas.

complaints go up

Leaders want their team to keep their operations running smoothly at all times. Whether it’s a mishap with communication or the way you handle a situation, it’s safe to say that the way you handle a poor situation says a lot about you as a leader.

One way you can help your team here would be for you to keep yourself accountable as much as possible. Part of honesty as a leader is acknowledging your mistakes and giving yourself the same compassion you would show to an employee.

You should also be a model for embracing change, particularly when that change comes from the top of the company. Model positive and professional responses to change, supporting your team extremely well through the difficult points, and never (ever) complain about the changes to your team.

3 more tips to make your event a success

http://www.baileydebarmore.com/blog/3-more-tips-to-make-your-event-a-success

http://www.baileydebarmore.com/blog/3-more-tips-to-make-your-event-a-success#comments

Uncategorized

Hosting a successful event is not only about showcasing your products or services but about leaving a long-lasting impression on your audience. In a previous article, I discussed 7 tips for making your business event a hit, including smart payment methods, quality branding, and the importance of preparation. Now let’s expand on those ideas and introduce some additional strategies to level up your event planning. You can invite professional speakers who can inspire and educate your attendees. This is the opportunity to reach out to a mentor or a thought leader among your contacts, or even an organization specialized in finding speakers, such as Executive Speakers.

A captivating speech can touch the hearts of your customers, making them more likely to remember and support your business.

You can also feature industry leaders to present on topics specific to your products or services, or conduct panels for engaging sessions.

stream live

To maximize your event’s reach, you may want to consider streaming it online. Streaming will allow remote attendees to attend and be aware of your business. It is the perfect solution to make your event accessible to those who couldn’t attend in person.

You can also record the live stream for later use, which is the perfect opportunity to throw a register-only summary of the business event. I promise you'll get emails and questions the day of the event from attendees asking if they can access a recording later. This may give them the opportunity to spend more time networking in person than paying attention to the speakers.

It can also serve as valuable marketing content, which you can repurpose gradually as part of your social media activities in the weeks and months after the event.

Photo by Jesus Loves Austin on Unsplash

promote early

You can’t throw a successful business event without giving your target audience plenty of time to prepare and schedule their attendance. Some events start their promotional campaigns almost a year before the due date. You want people to be able to put your event on their calendar and have plenty of time to request off work or put through the registration as a work expense.

For local business events, aim for at least 2 months prior. You can utilize social media, blog articles, landing pages, and email marketing to create interest and build tension. Reach out to local groups that maintain listservs and ask how to get your information in front of their members.

Hosting a successful business event requires a lot of work before, during, and after the event. If they ask for something you currently don't provide, don't get flustered. Thank them for the idea, and ask more about their thinking. Ask for their information so you can follow up.

Hopefully these tips will help you be successful at any business event you host or attend.

embracing technology to leverage your position

http://www.baileydebarmore.com/blog/embracing-technology-to-leverage-your-position

http://www.baileydebarmore.com/blog/embracing-technology-to-leverage-your-position#comments

Uncategorized

When you are at the helm of your company, you need to stay abreast of the latest innovations and industry ideas. Times have changed, and they continue to move forward at a rapid pace, especially in the realm of technological advancements. Instead of resisting change, and continuing to do things "the way you've always done it", ask for team member input on new technologies, or bring in consultants. You can then tailor results to be more specific and relevant.

The most talked about tool in AI lately seems to be ChatGPT. Rather than resisting "a new trend", create a free account and explore the possibilities. Look up videos online that show the range of what ChatGPT can be used for.

Of note, you must always remain cognizant of your company’s internal policies regarding the use of artificial intelligence. You do not want to run afoul of company rules and violate any non-disclosure agreements. When in doubt, be sure to ask. Some policies may allow the use of AI to produce slide decks and help with marketing or prospecting while other policies will strictly prohibit the use of AI in creating original content for clients or publications.

Watch this video to learn 8 of the top ChatGPT productivity tips you can utilize in your workplace.

Position yourself for success by utilizing the best strategies and resources available to your business. And it’s not just some feel-good quote. Take it from Raj Kalyandurg, who’s written about how merging passion with your career can be a game-changer. Check-in with yourself. Does working towards the success of your business bring you joy? If it did once, but not anymore, look inwards to assess what's changed and how to get back on track.

the art of balancing work and play

Being passionate is great. Being burnt out? Not so much. Yes, your business needs you, but remember, you’re not a machine. If you’re skipping those Sunday family brunches or those Netflix nights too often, maybe it’s time for a little calendar magic. It might be as simple as managing your time better, getting some extra hands on deck, or just setting a ‘closed’ sign on your office door after hours.

If your schedule is full of scattered meetings, try blocking off your time so that all your meetings occur during the afternoon, and your morning (if that's when you work best) is reserved for the work you need to get done.

customer knows best

The idea that every customer interaction is a goldmine is no overstatement. When a client gives feedback, they’re essentially providing you with a roadmap to tailor your services better. Negative comments? They may feel like attacks; but take a deep breath, step away, and come back to read the comments. Try thinking of them as free consultancy. They pinpoint areas that need refining. On the other hand, positive reviews aren’t just pats on the back; they underline what you’re getting right and should keep doing. Actively seeking feedback, be it through surveys or more informal chats, can help in creating a business model that’s both responsive and proactive. Imagine having a dynamic business that evolves based on real needs, rather than guesswork. That’s what effective feedback management can offer. You'll often be surprised at what customers prioritize versus what you were planning to do.

checking your business's financial pulse

Your financial status is more than just numbers on a balance sheet; it’s a vital sign of your business’s health. When you make a habit of closely reviewing financial statements, you’re more likely to spot inefficiencies and address them promptly. This could be redundant expenses, a product that’s draining resources without adequate ROI, or even surprisingly lucrative areas that deserve more investment. And while you might be the captain of your ship, sometimes an external perspective - like a financial advisor - can help you navigate treacherous waters with their specialized expertise.

happy employees make a thriving business

There’s a ripple effect that starts with your employees and extends to your customers and business reputation. When your team feels valued, they’re more inclined to put in discretionary effort - that extra mile that can make all the difference. And this doesn’t always mean hefty bonuses or extravagant perks. And it definitely doesn't mean pizza parties in place of a raise. Sometimes, a listening ear, opportunities for professional growth, and a positive work environment can work wonders. Investing in employee satisfaction is a long-term strategy that can lead to better customer service, increased innovation, and a stronger brand image. It’s not just about keeping them happy; it’s about unlocking their full potential for the benefit of the business.

But also, make sure you pay them their worth.

treading the digital tightrope

In an era where the digital domain reigns supreme, just having an online presence isn’t enough. Think about it. Your website is often the first interaction a potential customer has with your brand. If they can’t find what they need quickly, they may bounce over to a competitor. On the other hand, a well-strategized social media campaign can be the difference in engaging another market segment versus remaining completely invisible. Engaging online customer support can turn irate customers into loyalists. Being digitally savvy means continually assessing, iterating, and improving your online strategies to ensure they align with both current trends and your target audience’s preferences.

5 reasons to be on the lookout for a new job

http://www.baileydebarmore.com/blog/5-reasons-to-be-on-the-lookout-for-a-new-job

http://www.baileydebarmore.com/blog/5-reasons-to-be-on-the-lookout-for-a-new-job#comments

Uncategorized

You can spend years acquiring the skills for your dream job to one day make it, but that doesn't mean your career search is over. While this may make you feel more secure in the job search, job searching is a job in itself and it can be difficult to juggle a full-time job, non-work responsibilities, and looking for a new job.

According to a recent study, approximately “70% of all working-age people are actively looking for a job change,” with many considering leaving their current industry or profession entirely.

There are many reasons why you may belong to this statistic, whether you feel burned-out or unappreciated in your current role or have found that your passions/interests have changed since you first started in the professional world. You may simply be interested in what opportunities are out there.

You can mark your LinkedIn as "open to work" for specific positions - but only visible to recruiters. Take their call and learn about the position, and get to know them, and even if the job isn't a fit for you right now, you may know someone in your network that you can refer.

Photo by Glenn Carstens-Peters on Unsplash

identify your transferable skills

One of the easiest ways to boost your chances of getting a job is by identifying (and utilizing) your transferable skills - these are non-technical skills and soft skills that transfer between industries. Examples include project management, oral and written communication skills, problem solving, analytical reasoning, leadership...so on and so forth. These skills are difficult to teach, so if you come in with the experience that has afforded you these skills, employers are more likely to hire you and be happy to train you on the relevant technical skills you lack.

Match your transferable skills with those listed in the job description, and have the keywords reflect in your resume. Be prepared to provide examples via the STAR method during interviews.

consider your interests

If you feel burnt out within your specific industry, but don't know what you want to do instead, spend an afternoon brainstorming things you enjoy and things you don't. What is it in your current job you don't like? What would the opposite be? No answer is too out of the box.

For example, if you're tired of working in the same place and want to travel, you may want to look at hazmat trucking jobs. If you spend all day working at the computer and want more human interaction, maybe working as a customer service agent or at a call center would give you the interaction you crave.

You might find that you want to fulfil a dream you've always had.

Always dreamt about being a writer? Reach out to an author coach so that you can finally publish the book you’ve been working on.

Whatever your career goals may be, you’re not limited by anything except your own perception of what you need to be limited by.

pursue additional training

Sometimes, you'll need to look into additional training to acquire the skills required to land your dream job or get your foot through the door in a competitive industry. Sometimes transferable skills aren't enough for a company to risk giving you a shot, or maybe they don't have the resources to train you in those skills.

For example, some roles may require specific qualifications before you can apply for jobs. While this can be disheartening - especially if you want to start a new role right away - it's important to note just how many doors will open for you once you’ve obtained these qualifications.

Look up common certifications for the job industry you're looking at, and how you can attain it. How long does it take, how much does it cost, and are the courses online, in person, etc. If a certification can only be obtained after having a certain amount of time on the job, you can communicate your awareness of the field during screening interviews by mentioning your interest in pursuing that certification.

7 business strategies to improve your sales potential

http://www.baileydebarmore.com/blog/7-business-strategies-to-improve-your-sales-potential

http://www.baileydebarmore.com/blog/7-business-strategies-to-improve-your-sales-potential#comments

Uncategorized

If one of your goals for this year is to increase sales, know that there are several ways you can achieve this without sacrificing your business integrity. Invest in customer surveys to find out their motivations and desired products. Find out if there are ways to increase conversion rates on your website and social media accounts. Draft a brand rep search campaign to reach new customers.

use a sales funnel

Sales funnels allow you, as a business, the chance to map their customer's journey. Understanding the steps that a consumer is going to take when they shop for a certain product will help your sales managers, and you as a company leader, to create a process that leads to a conversion. It also lets you segment customers based on their past purchases and their level of interest, so you can customize future sales pitches.

interact with customers

Just because you have social media accounts, doesn't mean you're using them to their fullest potential. Most customers prefer to do research online, and may have questions that could be answered quickly via DM. Instead, they're stuck in the FAQ on your website and trying to submit contact forms. Customize the options your customers have for reaching out to the company based on their market segment. Look into a live chat option that helps answer questions using AI and then assign them to a sales rep if their question isn't answered.

offer a variety of payment options

It can be challenging offering payment methods both online and in person. You may have been to in-person locations with single sellers only using payment apps and felt less secure than if they had a wireless card machine. Think about your customer market segment (and do a survey if necessary) to find out their preferences for in-person payment options as well as online. Other options include offering payment plans through third-party companies for larger purchases. If you're interested in looking into wireless credit card machines, you can find out more here.

create a referral program

You can encourage customer loyalty by offering sales codes upon a repeat purchase and can increase your customer audience by offering referral incentives if a friend signs up using their loyalty code. You can also consider a brand rep program where your brand reps (existing loyal customers) do heavy lifting on social media for you with the benefit of reaching their entire audience.

bundle your products

Look at your sales to see if customers tend to buy several of your products together. Additionally, think about what other products may complement items you are already selling - even if you need to bring those in-house. By offering bundles you can offer an incentive for them to purchase more from you, at a relatively low discount for the convenience. Many online sales platforms also offer the ability for you to upsell prior to a customer checking out. This is a helpful resource, but don't annoy your customer with excessive windows to click through just to check out. This may reduce your conversion rate.

audit your pricing structure

Revisit your pricing structure at least once a year. Price increases should reflect inflation at the least, and you should also do market research to determine what your competitors are charging. There are ways to make your products more enticing than simply offering them at a lower price, particularly because some customers may actually be suspicious of items offered at a lower price without assurances that they are quality products.

3 ways to grow your virtual business

http://www.baileydebarmore.com/blog/3-ways-to-grow-your-virtual-business

http://www.baileydebarmore.com/blog/3-ways-to-grow-your-virtual-business#comments

Business

Do you own a virtual business?Have you spent the past few years setting goals and constructing initiatives to improve your business growth and development? From solidifying your brand and boosting sales, the advantages of focused efforts to grow your virtual business can help boost your sales and visibility.Photo by Windows on Unsplashget a physical addressPart of the joy of running a virtual business is that it's virtual - which means you’re not confined to a single office block or store. Read the manuals, watch videos online, and read blog posts from other photographers. Understand aperture, shutter speed, ISO, and white balance, among other features. The more you understand about these settings, the easier it will be for you to take great photos, troubleshoot when you want to adjust something, and elevate your game.

don't underestimate practice shoots

The best way to get better...is to keep practicing. Take a lot of pictures. Make a daily habit of doing at least one photo shoot a day. There's always something new to learn!

Go outside, stay inside. But taking lots of photos, and analyzing them after, is how you can learn from mistakes, experiment with new ideas, and improve your technique.

Taking a lot of photos helps you learn to 'see' the scene better, and you may even discover some unexpected treasures.

improve your composition

Read or watch videos about composition, both in design and in photography. When you're taking photos, think about what elements you want to be included in the shot and how they look when arranged together. Pay attention to the rule of thirds, and lead lines, when you're composing your shots, to improve the visual appeal of your photos. Additionally, try to keep the horizon level and avoid cutting off important features in your photos. Have plenty of storage cards ready to go so you don't hesitate to take many photos.

invest in the right gear

Quality equipment is essential for any photographer, but it doesn't have to break the bank especially if you are starting out. Invest in a camera body capable of taking high-resolution photos and supports interchangeable lenses. Next, you may consider an external flash or tripod if your budget allows it.

In this list you'll see recommendations to take courses and learn new skills, as well as find your niche. As you do those things, you may come across new software or equipment that can elevate you to the next level. Keep an Amazon list or a note on your phone with items to come back to as you save for the future.

learn photoshop and lightroom

Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop are essential tools for any photographer. With Lightroom, you can edit, organize, and share your images on the cloud. With Photoshop you can make creative adjustments like selective color correction or special effects. Both of these tools allow you to achieve professional-looking results. You can find introductory and advanced tutorials on both software online.

Paying for the software may be something you need to save for. If you're a student, check with your university or college to see if you can get a free subscription while you're enrolled.

use smartphone apps

Don't turn up your nose at apps on your phone for taking photos...especially if you're using your phone to take photos!

Apps like ProCam and VSCOcam have built-in editing capabilities that let you adjust exposure, contrast, and many other features to make your photos look more polished.
The best part is these apps are free and easy to use. You can also take photos on your Mac - check out https://setapp.com/how-to/take-photo-on-mac, to learn the tips for taking good pictures on a Mac.

take new courses

Taking a photography course or workshop may speed up the learning process if you tend to drag your feet with learning on your own. You may be able to find a master class from a professional photographer. You'll also get to meet other photographers in your area (if the workshop is in person).

Check out Udemy, Domestika, Skillshare, Creative Live, and The School of Photography for online courses. Expert Vagabond also put together a list of the 10 awesome online photography classes.

find your niche

I mentioned finding your niche earlier in the post. As you experiment more, you may find a certain type of lense, or a certain type of editing, that you're really interested in. Dive into the deep end and develop those skills. It can help define your style and make more meaningful work.
